| New woodturning tool to carve out multiple bowls from one blank! | ||||||||||
|
"I had a single bowl that had a spot in the middle, so having the blank held with the pins on both sides I removed the wood up to the pins. Once I had the outside and most of the inside shaped, I removed the front pin and secured the bottom. Now I could use the BowlSaw to remove the inside section out. This was a great way to quickly remove the piece without a hitch! Using the slower speed of the lathe and hand turning to get the BowlSaw to make the first cut made it a breeze! The piece stayed stable while cutting the middle off. By trying the BowlSaw in this manner it was a way to practice how it worked in another method. The BowlSaw is fast cutting, easy to use and saved a lot of time taking the middle section out." --Cathy Krumrei, Grand Rapids, Minnesota ______ "I have sent your payment by Paypal today. The bowlsaws work wonderfully well don't they! I am looking forward to making many more pairs of bowls in the future thanks to you. I will hopefully send you some photographs when they are all complete. Many thanks kindest regards." ______ "The BowlSaw arrived late yesterday and I had to wait till today to try it out. What a wonderful little tool!!! It performed just as easily as you said it would. Following the instructions very carefully and using a parting tool to cut the groove, I pulled these two bowls out of a six-inch diameter piece of walnut. Remember I told you I'm a real rookie at bowl turning. So for what my opinion is worth, I think you have a real winner here. If I can use this tool and succeed on the very first shot, anyone can. I'm looking forward to getting two for the price of one on a whole lot more bowl blanks. Again, thanks for a wonderful little tool." "Here are my initial views based on using the tool once--it works. I believe the maximum core I can get out of a blank would be about 5" by 2" deep. The sawing part of the BowlSaw is pretty easy and goes quickly. One plus is there is no setup compared to setting up the McNaughton. I feel comfortable in saying that this tool works, but I will also say it is very limited in what it can accomplish." "The tool cut much easier than I would have guessed and the core came out with no fanfare. So like many others have indicated, it does work, and considerably better than I would have guessed. I think a larger blank would have yielded a larger core. I was surprised at how quickly the core came out and how little rotational forces there were and how easy it was once I had created an entry hole. Would I buy one?--nope. Does it work as advertised? Yes, and probably better than advertised." "I think your BowlSaw is great. It works smoothly in the woods I've tried--from Pine to Paduk. It is a nice addition to those who use a mini-lathe or who have a bigger lathe but don't have another coring system. It makes coring out small bowls easy and safe on the relative low power of small lathes." "If you are turning bowls in the five to maybe six-inch size from exotic woods that cost a considerable amount, this tool may save you some money and you'll get one or two additional bowls out of the piece of wood. I recommend the BowlSaw as a way to save money and shavings on small blanks." "What I found positive was that there were no hazards in using the tool. When there was a catch the lathe stalled and this was on a 2 hp 3520. The tool worked as advertised, a second bowl was obtained from the original blank. On the negative side, there is a limitation because of the shape of the bowls. I prefer sloping sides." --Bill Kramm, Sun City, AZ "I didn't have any difficulty once I widened the trough enough to insert and remove the tool without hitting the side of the little core I was trying to remove. I think this will be a useful tool for those who use expensive wood to craft miniatures. The larger version will be more useful for small bowls and such. So far, I'm having fun, and I'll give it a good workout." "The saw worked exactly as advertised. I have the 6" model and was able to create a daughter-bowl blank that was 4" in diameter and just shy of 2" deep. The wood I was using was hard Maple. The most difficult part of the entire process was creating the "slot" in the "parent" bowl to allow the saw to make the cut. I used a combination of bowl gouge, scraper and parting tool. Once in position, the saw cut the blank without binding or catches. I have a Delta belt-driven lathe and the slowest speed is approximately 400 rpm. For the hard Maple, I think it would have been better to have a slower rpm as the tip of the saw did get quite hot. On my first attempt, I overshot the maximum diameter capability of the saw but was able to pry out the "daughter" blank without any damage. More accurate measurements remedied that problem. An original concern was that I would not be able to apply enogh torque to the saw handle to keep the blade cutting into the wood. This was not the case. The handle is large enough to provide a comfortable grip and apply sufficient pressure in the cut." "I've used the BowlSaw a couple of times now. On each occasion the tool has handled well without incident. I felt no major pulling or pushing of the saw. It felt very secure in my hand at all times. The core that is removed is ready for turning immediatlly. The grain is matched up with the bowl that it is removed from. For folks limited to a mini-lathe or who do not have the money to spend on an expensive coring system, this tool will allow the user to take at least one small bowl blank out of an expensive wood that they may be turning. I've noticed absolutely no catches or even the attempt at one. Once I turned my groove for the saw to fit into, I simply inserted the saw, turned the blank a time or two by hand to make a slight groove in the core to be removed, then turned the lathe on and began to turn the saw blade into it. The core was out of the blank before I knew it. Quick and easy, and to beat it all, safe. I don't know how anyone could ask for more from a tool at this price point. Specialty tool? Sure. But I believe it's a tool that many turners are going to find to be one of those they grab for nearly every blank they mount on the lathe."
